  • Description

Over 5,000 anti-war demonstrators were arrested in Washington on Monday (3 May) as they sought to disrupt traffic and bring the city to a standstill in protest at the American involvement in Indo-China.

The wave of arrests began when protestors attempted to block morning rush-hour traffic travelling into the city, and to close down the Federal Government. As the situation worsened during the morning, President Nixon ordered riot police and troops to use "fair but firm" tactics to end the growing number of confrontations.
