CHRISTINE GOITSCHEL OF FRANCE WON THE SPECIAL SLALOM RACE AT THE INTERNATIONAL LADIES CUP SKI COMPETITION AT OBERSTAUFEN YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). SHE HAD A TOTAL TIME FOR THE TWO RUNS OF 85.11 SECONDS.

SECOND IN THE CONTEST WAS CHRISTINE'S SISTER, MARIELLE GOITSCHEL, WITH A TIME OF 85.30 SECONDS. THE AMERICAN GIRL JEAN SAUBERT WAS THIRD IN 86.74 SECONDS. FOURTH WAS HEIDI BIEBL, WEST GERMANY; FIFTH CECILE PRINCE, FRANCE; SIXTH LINDA MEYERS OF THE UNITED STATES.

SKI RACE ORGANISERS ARE WORRYING OVER THE RELATIVE LACK OF SNOW, AND THOUSANDS OF CUBIC METRES OF SNOW ARE BEING TRANSPORTED TO THE SKI RUNS. SINCE RACERS OFTEN REACH SPEEDS OF 50MPH, A GOOD BASE AND CUSHION OF SNOW IS ESSENTIAL. ALREADY THERE IS TALK OF CANCELLING RACES IN OTHER WINTER SPORTS REGIONS BECAUSE OF THE THIN LAYER OF SNOW.
