  • Description

An eight-man Soviet parliamentary delegation is currently on a six-day visit to Cyprus at the invitation of the Cypriot House of Representatives.

SYNOPSIS: The Soviet team arrived on the island last Friday (13 May) and one of the first places they visited was the Old Presidential Palace which was set on fire by demonstrators three years ago. The Palace is now being re-built. The Soviet delegation is led by Mr Alexei Chitikov -- who spoke to newsmen before the delegation moved on to their next engagement.

Near Dhekelia the Soviet visitors were shown around a refugee camp and were followed by residents carrying placards showing slogans in Russian. According to local observers Cyprus is seeking wider international guarantees and support for a new structure for the Cyprus Republic. At the moment 36 per cent of the island is occupied as the "Turkish Federated State", but this has not been internationally recognised.

Later the Soviet delegation went to Archbishop Makarios' official residence, where they had a meeting with the Cyprus President. The Archbishop suffered a heart attack about six weeks ago, but reports from Cyprus indicate that he is making a steady recovery and earlier this month he presided over meetings of the National Council. It has also been announced that he will attend the Commonwealth Conference in London next month.
