  • Description

COPENHAGEN'S LITTLE MERMAID STATUE RESUMED HER PLACE ON THE SEAFRONT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FIVE WEEKS AFTER VANDALS BEHEADED HER. THE NEW HEAD WAS CAST FROM SCULPTOR ERIKSEN'S ORIGINAL PLASTER.

CROWDS CHEERED AS A COVERING WAS REMOVED FROM THE STATUE AND THE CITY'S MAYOR JORGENSEN PLACED A BOUQUET OF RED ROSES IN HER HANDS. HE WELCOMED "THE DARLING OF THE WHOLE WORLD" BACK TO HER PERCH ON A TWO-TON GRANITE BOULDER AT THE ENTRANCE TO COPENHAGEN HARBOUR.

MONEY CONTRIBUTED TOWARDS THE RESTORATION BY CHILDREN FROM ALL OVER DENMARK WILL BE USED TO ILLUMINATE HER AT NIGHT. IT'S HOPED THESE LIGHTS WILL SCARE OFF ANY FUTURE BEHEADING ATTEMPTS.

THE STATUE REPRESENTS A CHARACTER IN A HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN TALE.
