  • Description

THE FIRST FLIGHT-RATED GEMINI SPACECRAFT HAS BEEN HANDED OVER TO THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION AT CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA.

IT'S DESIGNED TO CARRY TWO MEN AND TO STAY IN ORBIT FOR TWO WEEKS.

THE SPACECRAFT WAS BUILT IN A ST. LOUIS FACTORY AND AIRLIFTED TO CAPE CANAVERAL. HOWEVER, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND WILL BE UNMANNED WHEN BLASTED ALOFT. THIS IS SCHEDULED FOR EARLY NEXT YEAR.

THIS INITIAL FLIGHT WILL BE MADE PRIMARILY TO CHECK ON ANY STRUCTURAL DEFECTS AND TO DETERMINE ITS SUITABILITY FOR A TITAN II LAUNCH VEHICLE. THERE IS LITTLE LIKELIHOOD OF IT BEING RECOVERED.

TWELVE MORE SIMILAR GEMINIS ARE TO BE DELIVERED TO THE SPACE AUTHORITY AT A COST OF 456-MILLION DOLLARS.

THE GEMINI SPACECRAFT IS SIMILAR TO THE MERCURY IN SHAPE, BUT IS DOUBLE ITS WEIGHT AND CABIN SPACE IS 50 PER CENT GREATER. IT WILL ALSO HAVE THE CAPACITY TO CARRY ADDITIONAL OXYGEN, AND THE FUEL NECESSARY FOR LONGER FLIGHTS.

ITS DESIGNERS HAVE DESCRIBED IT AS THE POSSIBLE "WORKHOUSE OF SPACE."
