  • Description

Tourism is making an increasingly important contribution to the economy of the Ivory Coast. Each year, more foreign visitors enjoy the facilities available to those who wish to spend their holidays under the tropical sun.

SYNOPSIS: In the capital of Abidjan, large sums have been invested in the tourist industry. Several modern hotels, including a Hilton and Sheraton, represent a total capacity of four thousand eight hundred rooms. For many tourists, the Ivory Coast is on the top of the list of preferred African destinations. And the government is helping to promote the industry.

National Tourist week (29 October to 4 November) was formally launched by the Minister of Tourism Mr. Kone Ibrahima and the Finance Minister Mr. Abdoulaye Kone The aim of the promotion was to help advertise both at home and abroad the advantages of an Ivory Coast holiday. One way of helping to achieve this aim was to show the visitors some traditional artists at work.

Modern air transport has helped to boost the number of visitors to the Ivory Coast from 137 thousand in 1978 to 179 thousand last year (1978). And the number for this year (1979) was expected to top 210 thousand tourists. Many like to swim in a modern pool ....
Others prefer the unspoilt beauty and solitude of a wide beach fringed with palm trees. The biggest group of tourists, forty percent of the annual total, come from France.

Other tourists who come to browse and buy in the market are from Ghana, the United States, Italy and Mali. Seven thousand people work in the tourist industry, rising to ten thousand 1980. This makes tourism the fourth most industry in the Ivory Coast economy, behind cocoa, coffee and the timber industry. Tourism has become a major earner of foreign exchange.
