The French Cabinet tonight approved suggestions by Mon. Gaillard, the Prime Minister, for a Western Mediterranean defence pact and for economic cooperation between countries bordering on the Sahara. A spokesman said that detailed proposals were being prepared.
Present at the Elysee Palace for the discussions were, among others, Mr Pflimlin, Finance Minister; Bourges-Maunoury, Justice: Chaban-Delmas, Defence; Ribeyre, Industry; Lacoste, Minister for Algeria; and M. Gaillard, Prime Minister.
Mr Murphy and Mr Beeley, the American and British "good offices" representatives, who seek a resumption of Franco - Tunisian negotiations, later the same day had consultations with Mon. Gaillard lasting over two hours at the Hotel Matigon. The meeting broke up just after midnight.
Mr Murphy and Mr Beeley were expected to fly to Tunis tomorrow for further negotiations with President Bourguiba.
