  • Description

SIXTY FOUR ELDERLY MEN AND WOMEN WERE TRAPPED AND BURNED TO DEATH WHEN FIRE SWEPT THROUGH AN OLD FOLK'S HOME AT NORWALK, OHIO, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). MANY WERE INVALIDS -- LYING DISABLED IN THEIR BEDS, TOO WEAK TO GET CLEAR BEFORE THE ROOF CAVED IN.

THE ONLY SURVIVOR WERE THREE STAFF MEMBERS ON DUTY AND 21 RESIDENTS; MOST OF WHOM WERE RESCUED BY A PASSING LORRY DRIVER, WHO, AFTER GIVING THE ALARM, GOT OUT AS MANY AS HE COULD BEFORE THE ROOF COLLAPSED. ALL THAT WAS LEFT STANDING WAS THE FRONT WALL OF THE BUILDING , WITH THE DOORWAY BEARING THE NAME "GOLDEN AGE NURSING HOME".

FANNED BY A STRONG WIND, THE BLAZE WAS MADE EVEN WORSE BY A TANK OF PROPANE GAS AT THE BACK OF THE BUILDING. MANY BODIES RECOVERED WERE BURIED BEYOND RECOGNITION.

A LOCAL SHERIFF SAID THE OLD PEOPLE TRAPPED HAD REMAINED SILENT TO THE END. HE SAID: "THERE WASN'T ANY SCREAMING AT ALL. IT WAS THE MOST HORRIBLE FIRE I HAVE EVER SEEM. " WITH NO EXPLANATION OF ITS CAUSE, THE OHIO GOVERNOR HAS ORDERED A POLICE INVESTIGATION.
