AMONG THE MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY TO ATTEND THE GAMES -- AN EVENT WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT FAVOURITE OF BRITAIN'S ROYALTY -- WERE THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH; PRINCE CHARLES, THE PRINCE OF WALES; PRINCESS ANNE, PRINCES ANDREW AND EDWARD, THE QUEEN MOTHER, PRINCESS MARGARET AND HER TWO CHILDREN.

ONE OF THE MAIN COMPETITORS WAS ENGLAND'S ARTHUR ROWE, WHO ALREADY HOLDS THE GAMES' RECORDS FOR PUTTING THE HEAVY 28LB STONE, THROWING THE 56LB WEIGHT (OVER BAR), THROWING THE 28LB WEIGHT FOR DISTANCE, AND PUTTING THE 16LB STONE. EVERY YEAR HE GOES NORTH AND MANAGES TO DEFEAT THE SCOTS AT THEIR OWN GAMES.

THE DANCING CONTESTS -- REEL, FLING, SWORD DANCE AND SEANN TRIUBHAS -- ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF EVERY HIGHLAND GATHERING, AS ARE THE MASSED BANDS AND BAGPIPERS.

THE GAMES, ORIGINATED AS IMPROMPTU COMPETITION IN THE HIGHLANDS W
WHEN THE CHIEFS USED TO SUMMON THE CLANS FOR HUNTING OR MILITARY GATHERINGS -- OR JUST TO DISCUSS CLAN BUSINESS IN GENERAL. THE GAMES CAME TO AN END AFTER THE JACOBITE RISINGS OF 1745 BROKE UP THE CLAN ORGANIZATIONS. THEY WERE REVIVED EARLY IN THE 19TH CENTURY BRAEMAR AND SYRATHDON ON BEING THE FIRST IN 1817 -- AND GRADUALLY SPREAD THROUGHOUT SCOTLAND. TODAY THERE ARE ABOUT 40 MAJOR MEETINGS IN SCOTLAND -- AND MANY "EXPATRIATES" ONES-WHEREVER SCOTSMEN LIVE AROUND THE WORLD.
