  • Description

In Christchurch, New Zealand, fire swept through a Dry Cleaning factory, causing damage worth a quarter of a million dollars.

The cause hasn't been found -- but firemen were at the scene more than five hours. In another drama, a fire hydrant blew out, injuring a fireman and deluging surrounding streets.

A forty mile an hour wind spread the blaze through the factory roof and walls. Nine fire engines were on the spot and managed to prevent the flames from reaching an adjoining storehouse containing highly inflammable liquids.

A pall of smoke hung over Christchurch, blotting out intersections where police were diverting traffic.

Fifty people worked at the factory, but the management said operations would now be transferred to another plant.

At the height of the blaze, fire hydrant blew up. One firemen was sent reeling into a wall and required hospital treatment. Water gushed high into the air as flames and smoke swirled around.
