Background: The winners of the U.S. film industry's "Oscar" awards will be announced on Tuesday (27th March). Among the many nominees in the various categories, are 3 actresses competing for the "best actress" award.

The three actresses are Cicely Tyson, Liv Ullmann and Liza Minelli. Cicely Tyson was nominated for her part in the American film "Sounder". This film deals with the social problem of a black family living in the Southern United States in the 1930's. Cicely Tyson plays the part of a woman whose husband is imprisoned for stealing food to feed his hungry family.

Liv Ullmann was nominated for her part in the Swedish film "The Emigrants". Miss Ullmann is a Norwegian actress who has appeared mainly in the films of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.

Liza Minelli received her nomination for "Cabaret" in which she plays a night club entertainer in pre-war Berlin. Miss Minelli is the daughter of the late Judy Garland, the famous Hollywood actress and singer.
