  • Description

In Amman, King Hussein of Jordan has held two separate rounds of talks with the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East, Alfred Atherton, and the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mohammed Ibrahim Kamel. Both meetings (25 and 26 July) dealt with the latest Middle East peace developments.

SYNOPSIS: Basman Palace in Amman was the venues for the first round of talks between King Hussein and Mr. Atherton on Tuesday (25 July). According to U.S. officials, the talks were held to brief the Jordanian monarch on the recent Middle East peace talks at Leeds Castle in Britain. Although detail of the Amman talks were not released, Mr. Atherton was expected to continue U.S. efforts to hold further negotiations between Egypt and Israel in Sinai next month.

On Wednesday (26 July), King Hussein and Jordanian officials were briefed once again on the Leeds Castle talks -- this time by Mr. Kamel, who was on a one-day visit to Amman. The Egyptian Foreign Minister also delivered a message from President Sadat to King Hussein on recent peace efforts. The meeting between King Hussein and Mr. Kamel followed a recent statement by Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan that Israel was prepared to discuss sovereignty on the Jordan West Bank after five years. Egyptian officials rejected the proposal on the grounds that it contained nothing new. Jordan had cautiously supported President Sadat's new peace plan. President Sadat later called a meeting of the National Security Council -- Egypt's supreme policy-making body, which only sits in times of crisis. Before leaving Amman, Mr. Kamel also met Jordan's Prime Minister, Mr. Modar Badran.
