  • Description

Thousands of people demonstrated in Baghdad on Friday (17 March) to protest against King Hussein's plan to create a federation between the east and west banks of the Jordan River to be called the United Arab Kingdom. Among the speakers at the rally which was part of the demonstration were representative of the ruling Baath Socialist Party, members of the Iraqi Communist Party and representatives of Palestinian organisations.

In a statement earlier in the week, the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council denounced King Jussein's plan for a Jordanian federation, saying the proposal was "defeatist". The Council said the plan was an inevitable sequel to the peace plans promoted by United States Secretary of State William Rogers last year.

On Saturday (18 March), Egypt, Syria and Libya denounced King Hussein's plan and called on other Arab countries to reject the idea. A statement issued by the Presidential Council of the new Federation of Arab Republics which links the three countries, claimed the plan was a formula for the creation of a Palestinian state under the influence of Israel.

Iraq has begun consultations with Egypt and Syria on its recent proposals for a federation between the three countries.
