  • Description

Foreign nationals on tour or non-essential business in the Middle East continued to leave Tel Aviv by air yesterday (Wednesday) after being advised by their countries to leave the danger areas. So far warnings have been issued by the United States, the United Kingdom. Australia and Scandinavian countries.

The U.S. State Department estimated on Tuesday (23 May) that there were about 10,000 Americans in the Israel-Egypt-Syria-Jordan areas and, besides naming the four countries to avoid, the Department also suggested that Americans planning to travel in nearby countries should postpone trips unless essential.

Australians too have been warned to keep away from Israel and its immediate neighbourhood unless they have strong reasons for being there.

A similar warning has been issued by the British Government.

A plane load of about 150 Scandinavian teenage girls and boys arrived in Rome last night (24 May) after their embassies in Israel decided on their return as "a precautionary measure". Most of them had been on holiday. The aircraft immediately returned to Tel Aviv for another lead.
