  • Description

A serious political crisis appeared close in Turkey on Wednesday (14 March) as Parliament remained deadlocked after four inconclusive ballots for the election of a new President.

Guards ringed the grounds of the Parliament buildings as top security was maintained in the tense atmosphere.

In the four inconclusive ballots, the Army-backed candidate, General Faruk Gurler, trailed second behind Senate Speaker Tekin Ariburun, who was supported by the largest group in Parliament, the Conservative Justice Partly.

Tension between politicians and the military commanders was reported to be increasing and an adjournment was called after the fourth ballot.

The new President, who will succeed Mr. Devdet Sunay at the end of his seven-year-term on 28 March, is determined by a majority ballot of the country's 634 parliamentarians.
