  • Description

Stan Smith of the United States opened the centre court programme of the 1972 Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship in London on Monday (26 June), with the day's quickest win. He took only an hour to beat West German Hans-Joachim Plotz 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

The tall U.S. Army corporal was runner-up for the Wimbledon title last year and is the heavy favourite to take the single's championship this year. But the men's singles is being contested in one of the weakest field in recent years. Wimbledon is without John Newcombe, champion for the pat two years, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewell and all the other contract professionals of the World Championship Tennis (WCT), who are barred this year under an International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) ruling.

The women are certain to take the limelight at Wimbledon with established favourites such as reigning champion Evonne Goolagong of Australia and former champion Billie Jean King of the United States, and the exciting U.S. newcomer, 17-year-old Chris Evert. The women begin play on Tuesday (27 June).
