  • Description

THE APOLLO SPACECRAFT IN WHICH UNITED STATES ASTRONAUTS WALLY SCHIRRA, WALT CUNNINGHAM AND DON EISELE WILL FLY THE FIRST MANNED APOLLO MISSION, WAS SHIPPED THIS WEEK FROM DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA, TO THE KENNEDY SPACE CENTRE IN FLORIDA.

IN A FEW MONTHS SCHIRRA AND HIS CREW WILL TEST THE APOLLO SYSTEMS DURING AN EARTH ORBITAL FLIGHT LASTING ABOUT 10 DAYS. THE MISSION WILL BE KNOWN AS APOLLO 7.

FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS THE APOLLO SPACECRAFT HAS UNDERGONE AN INTENSIVE SERIES OF TESTS AT NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL'S SPACE DIVISION IN DOWNEY. PARTICULAR ATTENTION HAS BEEN PAID TO REDUCING THE DANGER OF FIRE IN THE CREW DEPARTMENT.

MAJOR CHANGES BUILT INTO THE APOLLO CREW CABIN FOR ASTRONAUT SAFETY INCLUDE THE USE OF NON-FLAMMABLE MATERIALS, AND A NEW QUICK-OPENING HATCH WHICH, POWERED BY GAS, CAN BE UNLATCHED AND OPENED FROM THE INSIDE IN SECONDS.

THE APOLLO WAS FLOWN FROM CALIFORNIA TO CAPE KENNEDY ON BOARD A SPECIALLY DESIGNED AIRCRAFT CALLED THE "PREGNANT GUPPY."
