    Seven impressionist paintings made GBP781,000 in 21 minutes at an auction - the biggest art sale of its kind of all time - at Setheby's in London's chic Bend Street October 15.

    A Cezanne painting netted GBP220,000. The previous world record for a painting was GBP104,000 in Paris last year.

    In those 21 minutes the fate of the collection - belonging to millionaire Irwin Goldschmidt - was decided. They were some of the finest pictures left outside the world's galleries. and museums. All but one painting will got to the U.S.

    Some 15,000 people there rivalled the priceless paintings with mink, diamonds, glamour, cheque books. Most saw the sale on the house television.

    Some folks were plain sightseer. The others. world art dealers, socialites, newsmen, actors, writers.. and auctioneer Peter Wilson, immaculate in tails, who drew laughs and cash. At the GBP220,000 bid, Wilson - he gets ten per cent commission - mopped his brow, then in laconic voice asked: "Will nobody offer any more?"

    Public at Arles - GBP132,000; Cezanne's still life
    Grosses Pommes - GBP90,000; Cezanne's Garcon au Gilet
    Rouge - GBP220,000.
