TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: Mr C.B. Anderson: "I shall now read the citation that describes the deed performed by Muthuso. The Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines Bronze Medal has been awarded to Mokgosi Muthuso for conspicuous bravery beyond the call of duty, in that, with complete disregard for his own safety, he went to the rescue of H.T.S.Van Loggerenberg, ganger, who had been pinned by a fall of rock following an explosion of a charged hole at Geduld Proprietary Mines Limited, Springs, on the thirty-first of May, nineteen sixty. It now gives me great pleasure to present the Chamber's Bronze Medal and an inscribed watch."

Background: Ignoring the danger of being blown to bits by primed explosive charges, Mokgosi Muthuso, a Bechuana fuse-lighter at Geduld Mines near Springs in the Transvaal, ran back into the mine to save the life of a European ganger pinned down by falling rock.

At the mine Nov 17, his bravery was recognised when the "Miners' V.C."-was presented to Mokgosi by mr C.B.Anderson, President of the Chamber of Mines, after he had read the citation.

Thirty more fuses had been lit by Mokgosi, and the charged holes were about to begin going off one by one when the unexpected explosion occurred Dazed by the blast, Mokgosi began to run from the mine with another native when he heard Van Loggerenberg's cry. He managed to drag the injured European clear before the rest of the charges started to explode.

The Bronze Medal was first awarded in 1916. Since 1940 it has also been awarded to non-Europeans, and Mokgosi is the sixth non-European to receive it.
