  • Description

In Spain the remains of an urban guerrilla, executed two years ago, were re-buried in his tiny home-village of Zaruaz on Tuesday (27 September) as Basques and anti-Fascists marked the second anniversary of the executions of him and four others for their part in the murders of policemen. And, so demonstrations took place throughout the country, an anti-Fascist group claimed responsibility for the shooting of a Madrid police chief earlier in the day. His funeral took place amid tight security on Wednesday (28 SEPTEMBER).

SYNOPSIS: Two of the five men executed in 1975, were members of the Basque separatist organisation, ETA. One of them..now known simply as ???... wasn't a Basque, but he'd made his home in the tiny Basque village of Zaruaz. The entire population of the village - about 2 thousand - joined the procession on Tuesday as his remains were re-buried in his adoptive home. He'd been executed in Barcelona...and his remains were only recently returned to Zaruaz.

Txiki and the other four young left-wingers all died before a firing squad. On Monday, Txiki mother was at the service which preceded his re-interment. Unlike Madrid, where police battled with demonstrators marking the anniversary, there was no violence. And there was none reported either in other Basque villages which held their own demonstrations at the same time.

The next day, at the Police Academy on the outskirts of Madrid the funeral of the police chief shot dead by guerrillas. Captain Florentino Herguedas was the 10th policeman to die violently this year. The vice-Premier for Defence and the Interior Minister were at the funeral ceremony..the only Government Ministers to attend. As the policeman's widow looked on, Interior Minister Rodulfo Martin Villa placed a posthumous decoration on the coffin.

There's been tight security at the Police Academy to avert demonstrations..but at the cemetery later, the funeral was marred by shouts of "Government resign", and "Army to power". An unknown group, calling itself the "Revolutionary Organisation of Anti-Fascist Spain" has claimed responsibility for the killing.
