  • Description

West German police using water cannon, tear gas and batons beat back thousands of demonstrators trying to storm the site of a nuclear power station at Brokdorf on Saturday (13 November).

SYNOPSIS: The site had almost been turned into a fortress, surrounded by a moat and barbed wire, following a violent clash with some protesters there a fortnight ago. In Saturday's protest, about 25,000 demonstrators attended a rally near the site. They were protesting against the 1,300 megawatt power station being built near the village of Brokdorf, 30 miles (50 kms) north west of Hamburg.

About 3,000 militant demonstrators used planks to bridge the moat around the site and tried to force a way through the barbed wire fence. Police behind the wire used mobile water cannon to force dozens back into the moat. At the same time police charged the demonstrators behind, swinging batons and hurling tear gas grenades.

Many of the militants, described by police as "fringe anarchists", arrived with shields, helmets, gas masks and oilskins. They rally was called by a group calling itself the "Environmental Protection of the Lower Elbe". The group claims that too little is known about the risks of nuclear power. The rally had begun with a religious service at which four clergymen backed up the pleas of rally organisers to refrain from violence. Red Cross officials treated 50 demonstrators for injuries.
