  • Description

The Knesset, or Israeli Parliament, elected Professor Ephraim Katchalski its fourth president on Tuesday (10 April).

Professor Katchalski, 57, a Biophysicist and candidate of the ruling Labour Alignment party changed his name after the election to the Hebrew from Katzir. The name was adopted by his brother Ahron, a scientist who was among those killed by a Japanese suicide squad working for Palestinian guerrillas at Lod International airport last May.

The new president will take office on May 28 after Israel's 25th Independence Day Anniversary celebrations.

He succeeds 83-year-old President Zalman Shazar who served two terms. The presidency is largely a figurehead position with most power in the government resting with the Prime Minister -- Mrs. Golda Meir.
