  • Description

AN AUSTRALIAN OIL DRILLING COMPANY IS THE LATEST FIRM TO JOIN THE CURRENT OIL RUSH IN BRUNEI. THE FIRM IS DRILLING IN A 702-SQUARE MILE CONCESSION AT TUTONG, ABOUT 30 MILES (48 KM) FROM BRUNEI TOWN. THE AUSTRALIAN FIRM IS REPORTEDLY THE COUNTRY'S FIRST TO VENTURE INTO OVERSEAS OPERATIONS.

ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO, THE FUTURE OF THE BRITISH PROTECTORATE AS AN OIL DRILLING STATE WAS IN DOUBT. A CONCESSION BELONGING TO SHELL WAS DRYING UP AFTER HAVING BEEN WORKED FOR 30 YEARS. BUT THEN THE COMPANY BEGAN OFF-SHORE OPERATIONS AND STRUCK EVEN RICHER FIELDS.

OTHER OIL COMPANIES FOLLOWED BY INVESTIGATING FIELDS ON LANDS WHICH SHELL HAD NOT EXAMINED.

THE AUSTRALIAN FIRM IS THE OIL DRILLING AND EXPLORATION COMPANY OF SYDNEY, WHICH IS WORKING UNDER CONTRACT TO AN AMERICAN FIRM. MOST OF THE SYDNEY COMPANY'S ESSENTIAL WORKERS ARE VETERANS FROM THE OIL FIELDS OF QUEENSLAND AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

AFTER WEEKS OF PREPARATIONS AT THE CONCESSION AT TUTONG, THE 135-FOOT (41 M) DERRICK ARRIVED IN PIECES FROM AUSTRALIA. IT WAS ASSEMBLED AND THEN WENT INTO OPERATION.

ONLY ONE WELL HAS BEEN SUNK TO BEGIN WITH AN A DECISION ON FURTHER DRILLING WILL NOT BE MADE UNTIL THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN EVALUATED.
