Background: VISNEWS cameras were at the Empire Hall, Olympia, London Dec 30 for the press preview of "Britain's Great Indoor Harbour", the Fifth National Boat Show. The panoply of small boat and sailing enthusiasts was displayed in great abundance. Craft ranged in size from a 56 foot 10 berth motor cruiser costing over GBP25,000 to a 7 foot fibre glass runabout costing GBP45. Every kind of sport propellers, paint and chandlery, clothing and water skis had a place at the show.
Eyecatcher was the 'Dusky Queen' moulded fibreglass motorboat. Super sleek lines form the flare of the bows to the sweep of the stern cry speed and elegance. Built in flashing indicators for signalling turns to water skiers, powerful transistor radio and fluted latex foam upholstery...all for GBP415.
One of the biggest craft in the show, the luxury 40 foot 'Dolphin Clipper', was built in Holland. Weighs 20 tons and is capable of deep sea cruising. Carries enough fuel and water for a 1,000 mile trip. Controls for the powerful 75 h.p. diesel engines are of fountain pen size. Accommodation includes a ladies suite fitted with dressing table and shower bath.
The fun of building one's own sailing dinghy of motor runabout is reflected in the great variety of 'Do it yourself kits'. The extent to which the boat kit industry has grown in recent years indicates how popular sailing has become for national leisure.
Special features of the show include 'Boating on a Budget' with craft ranging in price from GBP20 to GBP250... 'Anglers Corner' with a bigger than ever display of tackle and other fishing equipment...
A model of the Royal Navy's 'Brave Borderer' 50 know gas turbine patrol boat was exhibited with great success. Fastest warship in the World the 'Brave Borderer' is one of two built to keep alive coastal forces technique.
