    The Nigerian Commissioner for Economic Development and Reconstruction, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has said that broadcasting in Africa is still in its infancy stage. He urged that every effort should be made to ensure that any expansions and improvements were based on sound and well tried principles.

    The Commissioner was speaking at the opening of a joint International Telecommunications Union and the Union of National Radio and Television Organisation in Africa seminar on the planning of broadcasting.

    SYNOPSIS: In Lagos, the Nigerian Commissioner for Economic Development and Reconstruction, Mr Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has called for the expansion and improvement of African broadcasting. He was speaking at the opening of a seminar held by the International Telecommunications Union and the Union of National Radio and Television Organisations held in Lagos last week.

    Later in the day, Mr R Aspinal, a UNESCO expert based in the Institute of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, addressed the delegates. Radio and television experts from several African states are attending the seminar, which is scheduled to last until the ninth of May.

    The delegates were told that Africa had much to learn from the experience of the older nations in broadcasting systems. Commissions Alhaji Shehu also told the delegates that such a seminar was a most productive way of exchanging ideas and experiences.
