  • Description

Sudanese president Jaafar al-Nimeiry laid the foundation stone for a 250 million pound (sterling) sugar factory on the east bank of the White Nile on Thursday (25 November).

SYNOPSIS: President Nimeiry arrived for the ceremony in an open truck surrounded by his personal staff.

He told newsmen at the site that he regarded Thursday as one of the most important days in Sudanese history.

Large numbers of police were present - mingling with the crowd as the president took his seat in the official stand.

The factory construction is known as the Kenana Sugar Project. It's believed to be the biggest of its type in Africa and the Arab world. It's being jointly financed by the Sudanese government, the Arab Investment Company and the Gulf Fishing Company of Kuwait.

The Nissho-Iwai company of Japan, the Kuwaiti government and the London-based finance company Lonrho will act as managers of the project. The factory is expected to go into production by early 1978. Original output is expected to be around 50,000 tonnes per year, increasing to a million tonnes by about 1983.
