  • Description

An all-white jury has found special deputy sheriff Tom Coleman not guilty of shotting a seminarian to death and wounding a Roman Catholic priest.

The defense abruptly concluded its case yesterday (29 September) after 54 minutes of testimony characterising Coleman as a reputable officer who had killed the minister - a white civil rights worker in self-defense.

The defense said the seminarian - 26-year-old Jonathan Daniels - had a knife in his hand when the two came face-to-face at a grocery store where Daniels had gone to buy food. The defense also claimed that the priest, 26-year-old Richard Morrison, had a pistol in his hand. Neither weapon was produced at the trial. The contention was that a "tall Negro" had run off with the weapons and was not seen again. Morrison did not testify since he is still recovering from shotgun wounds.
