    A West German-financed Protestant student centre was opened in Abidjan on Thursday (19 November) by Education, Youth and Sports Minister Etienne Ahin.

    West German Ambassador Herr Jack Hasslacher was among the many guests at the opening ceremony in the Cocody section of Abidjan where the student centre is located.

    In his address, M. Ahin said it was vital for the country's rapid development that there be a sufficient facilities for educational and student amenities. He thanked the West German Central Evangelical Agency, which contributed towards the construction of the centre, for their gift and offered his nation's thanks to the West German Government.

    M. Ahin also said that it was fortunate that there were students in the Ivory Coast of the variety of religions who would be able to make use of the centre.

    Herr Hasslacher said in reply that he hoped the centre would provide favourable surrounding in which students could learn.

    Following the speeches, M. Ahin and Herr Hasslacher toured the facility, accompanied by other guests.

    The West German Central Evangelical Agency contributed about 105 million Central African Francs (about 1,600,000 Pounds Sterling) towards the centre which will house students from 11 African states -- the Ivory Coast, Tem, Togo, Dahomey, Senegal, Congo-Kinshasa, the Malagasy Republic, Guinea, Sierra-Leone, the Central African Republic and Mali.
