  • Description

A freak tornado hit Vancouver, in Washington State in the far north-west of the United States yesterday (Thursday). It lasted only a minute and a half, but last six people dead, more than three hundred injured and millions of dollars of damaged.

The greatest loss of life was in a discount store, where five people, including a child, were killed. A woman died in the wreckage of a bowling alley. And about a hundred children were hurt when their school was destroyed. The roof of the school was blown right off; if it had fallen instead, it is likely that many of the children would have been killed.

SYNOPSIS: A freak tornado hit Vancouver, in Washington State yesterday (Thursday) leaving a trial of wreckage across the town. This was once a bowling alley. A woman died here.

And about a hundred children were hurt when their school was wrecked. The fact that the roof blew off instead of falling in probably saved their lives.

The storm was completely unexpected, and lasted only about a minute and a half. But when it had passed, six people had died.

Five of them - including this child - were killed in the collapse of a discount store. Altogether about three hundred people were injured.

The damage is estimated in millions of dollars.
