  • Description

MORE THAN 70,000 CITIZENS TURNED OUT TO GREET PRESIDENT HAMANI DIORI OF NIGER WHEN HE VISITED PHNOMH PENH RECENTLY.

PRESIDENT DIORI WAS IN CAMBODIA AT THE INVITATION OF THE COUNTRY'S RULER PRINCE SIHANOUK. CAMBODIA, WHICH HAS FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS PURSUED A POLICY OF ISOLATIONISM, HAS DECIDED TO SWITCH TO AN "OPEN DOORS" POLICY.

PRINCE SIHANOUK WISHES TO STRENGTHEN DIPLOMATIC, TRADE AND CULTURAL TIES WITH OTHER COUNTRIES, PARTICULARLY WITH AFRICAN NATIONS WHOSE DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS CLOSELY RESEMBLE THOSE OF CAMBODIA.

THE MASS RALLY TO WELCOME PRESIDENT DIORI WAS HELD IN THE STATE NATIONAL STADIUM AT PHNOMH PENH. DURING THE RECEPTION CEREMONIES THE MAYOR OF THE CITY PRESENTED THE KEYS OF PHNOMH PENH TO THE VISITING PRESIDENT.

ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE RECEPTION CAME WHEN SCHOOLCHILDREN FORMED UP IN THE STADIUM BOWL WITH CARDS WHICH READ: "VIVE LE PRESIDENT DIORI".

PRESIDENT DIORI IS SCHEDULED TO VISIT ANGKOR WAT, AN ANCIENT RUINS EXCAVATED BY FRENCH ARCHAEOLOGISTS IN THE 19TH CENTURY.
