  • Description

AS LONDON'S STREET FILL WITH ROTTING REFUSE, MORE DUSTMEN TODAY ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WOULD JOIN THE UNOFFICIAL STRIKE WHICH BEGAN TWO WEEKS AGO IN THE BOROUGH OF HACKNEY.

DUSTMEN IN THE LONDON BOROUGH OF MERTON WERE THE LATEST TO STOP WORK. NOW ONLY OF THE CAPITAL'S THIRTY-TWO BOROUGHS - WANDSWORTH - STILL HAS NORMAL REFUSE COLLECTIONS.

THE DUSTMEN ARE ASKING FOR A RAISE IN WEEKLY EARNINGS FROM GBP15.9. SHILLINGS TO GBP20 STERLING.

THE STRIKE HAS SPREAD TO A NUMBER OF TOWNS OUTSIDE LONDON, INCLUDING ONE IN SCOTLAND, BUT IT IS IN THE CAPITAL THAT THE SITUATION IS AT ITS WORST. DUSTBINS OVERFLOW IN MANY OF THE SHOPPING STREETS, SURROUNDED BY GROWING MOUNTAINS OF PAPER BAGS FULL OF REFUSE. SOME REFUSE IS BEING REMOVED BY PRIVATE CONTRACTORS, PARTICULARLY FROM THE CITY'S STREET MARKETS, WHERE ROTTING VEGETABLES, BOXES OF SEAFOOD SHELLS, BROKEN CRATES AND SODDEN PAPER SLOWLY PERMEATE THE AIR WITH THEIR MINGLED STENCH. DISINFECTANT SPRAYED ON THE REFUSE HELPS TO KEEP DOWN THE GROWING CLOUDS OF FLIES, AND THE DANGER OF DISEASE.

IN LARGE BLOCKS OF FLATS, REFUSE IS BEING STORED IN CELLARS, CAREFULLY WRAPPED IN PLASTIC BAGS. RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN ASSURED THAT THE MANAGEMENT CAN COPE WITH A PROTRACTED STRIKE'.

PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDERS HAVE TAKEN THEIR OWN ACTION - BRINGING CAR-LOADS OF RUBBISH TO THE COUNCIL REFUSE DEPOTS. THEY IGNORE THE PICKETS OF STRIKERS OUTSIDE THE DEPOTS, BUT STRIKERS IN ONE BOROUGH HAVE THREATENED TO BOYCOTT, WHEN THE STRIKE IS OVER, THOSE WHO DISPOSE OF RUBBISH THEMSELVES WHILE THE STRIKE IS ON.

THE BRITISH CABINET MET TODAY (7 OCTOBER) TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION, BUT RICHARD CROSSMAN, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES SAID TONIGHT THAT THERE WAS NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT EPIDEMICS AT PRESENT.

THERE IS LITTLE CHANCE OF ANYTHING BEING DONE TO END THE STRIKES UNTIL THURSDAY, WHEN LOCAL AUTHORITY WORKERS' PAY IS TO BE DISCUSSED A NATIONAL JOINT COUNCIL. MEANWHILE, THE GARBAGE MOUNTS, AND THE STR IS SPREADING - GRAVE-DIGGERS, ROADSWEEPERS, LAVATORY CLEANERS, AND COU DRIVERS HAVE ALSO STOPPED WORK TO PRESS FOR HIGHER WAGES.
