  • Description

After a day of violent riots in Paris and Algiers France is tonight facing her gravest crisis since the war.

The temper of the demonstrators may be gauged from the incidents which took place when 2,000 veterans of both World Wars met to place a wreath at the Arc de Triomphe in memory of the three French soldiers recently executed in Algiers.

After laying the wreath the Marseillaise was sung, and this was accompanied by cries of "French Algeria."
The 2,000 veterans then marched down the Champs Elysees to the Pont de la Concorde, where they passed through the first police cordon.

The police during the evening were forced to take strong action against a mob of over 6,000 who swarmed down the Elysees and tried to storm the French National Assembly. Two thousand steel-helmeted police broke them up in the worst riot scenes in the capital for six years. The city's toughest riot squads met the chanting, stone-throwing mob in the Place de la Concorde. With batons and rifles they scattered the mob, and then chased them.

Security men in battledress ??? black rubber truncheons against tough ex-paratroopers (in red berets) who screamed "Algeria is French", and "Throw the Deputies in the ???."
In Paris, at midnight, M. Pflimlin announced after consultations with other leaders that he was going ahead with his bid for the Premiership - a bid that was taking place before a backdrop of inflamed Paris and Algeria.
