THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER, MR KOSYGIN, RECEIVED A WARM WELCOME IN GLASGOW TODAY (SATURDAY) WHEN HE ARRIVED TO SPEND FOURTEEN HOURS IN SCOTLAND.

HE HAD TRAVELLED ON AN OVERNIGHT TRAIN FROM LONDON, AND WAS MADE TO FEEL WELCOME ALMOST AS SOON AS HE LEFT HIS TRAIN.

MR KOSYGIN CONSTANTLY BROKE WITH PROTOCOL BY MOVING AWAY FROM HIS SECURITY GUARDS TO SHAKE HANDS WITH SIGHTSEERS AND WELLWISHERS.

AT ONE STOPPING POINT MR KOSYGIN CLASPED HANDS WITH A MAN AND ASKED HIM HOW OLD HE WAS AND WHAT HE DID FOR A LIVING. WHEN THE MAN SAID HE WAS SIXTY AND WORKED AS A SCAFFOLDER, MR KOSYGIN SMILED AND TOLD THE MAN HE WAS AGED 62.

MR KOSYGIN VISITED GEORGE SQUARE AND THE GLASGOW CITY CHAMBERS. AN ESTIMATED FOUR THOUSAND GLASWEGIANS CHEERED HIM AS HE ENTERED THE CITY CHAMBERS.

THIS AFTERNOON THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER ATTENDED A FOOTBALL MATCH BETWEEN GLASGOW RANGERS AND KILMARNOCK. THE 30-THOUSAND SPECTATORS AT THE MATCH CHEERED AND SANG, AND MR KOSYGIN RESPONDED BY ACKNOWLEDGING THE CROWD WITH A CLASPED HANDS SIGNAL.

(RANGERS, SECOND ON THE SCOTTISH FOOTBALL DIVISION LADDER, DEFEATED KILMARNOCK TWO-NIL. KILMARNOCK DEFEATED MOSCOW TORPEDO - A SOVIET TOURING SIDE - FIVE YEARS AGO).
