    SOUTH VIETNAM GOVERNMENT TROOPS CLAIMED A VICTORY OVER VIET CONG UNITS A CHO GAO, DINH TUONG PROVINCE AFTER A BATTLE WHICH TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). AT LEAST 70 VIET CONG WERE REPORTED DEAD IN THE FIGHT WHICH TOOK PLACE ABOUT 30 MILES (48 KILOMETRES) SOUTH-WEST OF SAIGON.

    THE OPERATION BEGAN AT 8 A.M. WHEN UNITS OF INFANTRY AND ARMED PERSONNEL CARRIERS MOVED IN AGAINST THE VIET CONG. FOR HALF AN HOUR BOTH SIDES FOUGHT DESPERATELY, BUT THEN A FINAL ASSAULT OVERWHELMED THE VIET CONG.

    AFTERWARDS, 70 BODIES WERE COUNTED, TOGETHER WITH 20 LIGHT ARMS: LIGHT MACHINE GUNS AND RUSSIAN-MADE RIFLES. MEDALS WERE PINNED TO THE CHESTS OF A NUMBER OF GOVERNMENT SOLDIERS ON THE FIELD IMMEDIATELY THE BATTLE WAS OVER.

    (PRESIDENT JOHNSON WAS ASKED YESTERDAY BY NEWSMEN TO COMMENT ON THE VIETNAM CRISIS. HE SAID THAT SPECULATION THAT THERE WOULD BE SPREAD OF THE WAR IN THIS AREA WAS "PREMATURE".
