SIR HAROLD'S ARRIVAL MARKED THE RESUMPTION OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, BROKEN OFF BY THE U.A.R. WHEN THE IAN SMITH REGIME DECLARED RHODESIAN INDEPENDENCE.

    TODAY THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE, DR. AHMAD HASSAN EL-FIKKY FLEW INTO LONDON. THE 57 YEAR-OLD EGYPTIAN AMBASSADOR TOLD NEWSMEN AT THE AIRPORT: "I COME HERE FULL OF ANTICIPATION OF HELPING TO USHER IN A NEW ERA OF PURPOSEFUL RELATIONS."
    SIR HAROLD BEELEY WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND TWO DAUGHTERS. HE ALSO BOUGHT THE FAMILY'S TWO PET CATS. AT CAIRO AIRPORT TO GREET HIM WAS THE FOREIGN MINISTRY HEAD OF PROTOCOL, MR. GAMAL IZZAT, AND THE HEAD OF THE MINISTRY'S WESTERN EUROPEAN SECTION, MR. GAMAL MANSOUR. SIR HAROLD WAS PREVIOUSLY AMBASSADOR TO THE U.A.R. BETWEEN 1961 - 1964.

    SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN, SIR HAROLD SAID IT WAS NOT OFTEN THAT A GOVERNMENT SENT AN AMBASSADOR BACK A SECOND TIME TO A POST HE'D PREVIOUSLY HELD. IT MEANT THE GOVERNMENT ATTACHED PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO THE COUNTRY TO WHICH HE RETURNED.

    DR. AHMAD HASSAN EL-FIKKY TOLD REPORTERS AN ANSWER TO QUESTIONS THAT EGYPT WAS THE FIRST NATION TO WANT TO SEE THE SUEZ CANAL OPERATING NORMALLY AGAIN.

    HE WAS ALSO ASKED ABOUT THE MIDDLE EAST WAR.
