    A warning that South Africa could turn into another Vietnam if the Unite States is drawn into intervening there was made by the chairman of the United Nations Apartheid Committee on Wednesday (22 May). The Chairman, Mr. Edwin Oghu of Nigeria, told a press conference in Rome, Italy, where the committee has been meeting, that the Commander in Chief of the South African Armed Forces recently had consultations with the Pentagon in Washington. He went on, "I suspect this may be an effort to mobilise opinion in South Africa in preparation for an imaginary foe. South Africa may mobilise in so-called self-defence against attacks form Mozambique and Angola."
    The United Nations Apartheid Committee arrived in Rome, Italy on Tuesday (21 May) on a two day visit, part of a European tour to campaign for stronger international action against apartheid in South Africa. The 16 nation Committee has already had one meeting in the Irish capital, Dublin, and it is scheduled to meet in Berlin and Geneva before the end of the month.

    SYNOPSIS: The United Nations F.A.D. building in Rome, where the U.N. apartheid committee has been meeting. The sixteen-nation committee arrived in Rome on Tuesday for a two day visit.

    The Committee is to have several meetings in European capitals as part of a campaign for stronger international action against apartheid in South Africa.

    They have discussed the possibility that South Africa could turn into another Vietnam if the United States is drawn into intervening there. This warning was made public by the Chairman at a press conference in the Italian capital.

    Mr. Edwin Ogbu said that the Commander-in-Chief of the South African armed forces recently had consultations with the Pentagon in Washington. The chairman said he suspected this was an attempt to mobilise opinion in South Africa in preparation for an Imaginary foe.
