Background: DEPENDENTS OF AMERICAN PERSONNEL IN SOUTH VIETNAM ARE BEING EVACUATED TO ASIAN CITIES AT THE RATE OF 200 A DAY. THERE ARE ABOUT 1,800 DEPENDENTS IN THE WAR-ALERTED COUNTRY AND ALL THE EXPECTED TO BE MOVED OUT WITHIN 10 DAYS.

GENERAL MAXWELL TAYLOR, THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO SOUTH VIETNAM AND GENERAL WILLIAM WESTMORELAND, COMMANDER OF AMERICAN FORCES IN THE COUNTRY, WERE AT THE SAIGON AIRPORT TODAY (THURSDAY), TO BID FAREWELL TO THE EVACUEES. YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), GENERAL TAYLOR SPOKE OVER THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES RADIO THAT "IMPORTANT CHANGES" WERE TAKING PLACE IN THE COUNTRY AND THERE WERE "POWERFUL REASONS" WHY THEY HAD TO GO.

THE MOVE WAS ORDERED BY PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON, FOLLOWING LAST SUNDAY'S COMMUNIST VIETCONG ATTACKS ON UNITED STATES BASES AND THE RETALIATORY AMERICAN RAIDS ON COMMUNIST NORTH VIETNAM MILITARY BARRACKS AND STAGING AREAS.

APART FROM THE DEPENDENTS OF AMERICAN MILITARY, AGENCIES, EMBASSY AND AID MISSIONS PERSONNEL, THERE ARE 280 PRIVATE AMERICAN CITIZENS WITH 440 DEPENDENTS WHO ARE ALSO EVACUATING.

THE FIRST GROUP OF 51 DEPENDENTS AND PRIVATE CITIZENS HAD ARRIVED IN THE BRITISH COLONY OF HONGKONG, ON TUESDAY (9 FEB). THEY WERE FORM THE NORTHERN SOUTH VIETNAMESE CITIES OF THE HUE AND DANANG. THEY ARRIVED ABOARD AN AMERICAN HERCULES AIRCRAFT.
