    A FATAL PILE-UP MARRED YESTERDAY'S (SATURDAY) INDIANAPOLIS 500-MILE (800 KM) MOTOR RACE. THE CRASH, WHICH OCCURRED EARLY IN THE ANNUAL CLASSIC, KILLED TWO AMERICAN DRIVERS: EDDIE SACHS, AGED 37, OF DETROIT, AND 26-YEAR-OLD CALIFORNIAN DAVE MACDONALD.

    SACHS WAS BURNED TO DEATH, AND MACDONALD DIED IN HOSPITAL. FIVE OTHERS WERE INJURED. BOTH CARS EXPLODED AND BURST INTO FLAMES, AND KNOCKED SEVEN RACERS OFF THE TRACK.

    THE RACE WAS HELD UP FOR 100 MINUTES. A.J. FOYT, A 29-YEAR-OLD TEXAN, LATER WENT ON TO WIN IT. HIS FRONT-ENGINED OFFENHAUSER AVERAGED A RECORD 147.35 MILES (237.13KMS) AN HOUR.

    JIM CLARK, THE WORLD CHAMPION FROM BRITAIN, LED EARLY ON, BUT WAS FORCED TO RETIRE.
