Background: The President of the Somali Republic Abdul Rashid Shermarke, yesterday (Thursday) met President Gamal Abdul Nasser of the United Arab Republic in Cairo for talks at the Kubbah Palace. President Shermarke, on a two-day visit to the U.A.R., arrived in Cairo on Wednesday.

According to informed sources, the two leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East and problems of mutual interest to their countries.

Also present were Mr. Mahmoud Riad, the Foreign Minister of the U.A.R. and Mr. Abdul Salam Daoud.

Later that day, President Nasser was host at a dinner in honour of President Shermarke.

The Somali President flew to Alexandria today for a brief sightseeing tour.
