Background: Haiti plays Italy in group four of the World Cup series in Munich, West Germany, on Saturday (15 June) - and Haitian Trainer Antoine Tassy is confident his team can at least hold the Italians to a draw.
Tassy's confidence was bolstered after he saw Italy play a dull nil all draw against Austria in Vienna at the weekend. Tassy told newsmen at the Haitian camp, just outside Munich, that the Italians would have to play a lot better to beat his team. "They're not going to have an easy ride," he said.
However, sports writers still agree that the Haitians are very weak compared to the favourites like Brazil. They qualified for the championship round by topping the Central American and Caribbean competition. In doing so,, they had to eliminate Mexico who were represented in the 1970 finals. Italy were beaten by Brazil in the 1970 World Cup.
On Tuesday night, the Haitians, under trainer Tassy, underwent a heavy 90-minute training programme. The session began at six ocloxk - the time Saturday's match against Italy kicks-off. In Tassy's worlds, "They need to get the feel of the stadium at that time of day."
The Haitians are the only group four team based in Munich, and they've been adopted by the locals. The Italians and the Poles are staying near Stuttgart, 150 miles (230 kms) away.
Despite their trainer's confidence and the local support, Haiti is still considered a "non-runner" in the World Cup and will almost certainly end at the bottom of their group.
