Background: The Rhodesian Prime Minister Mr. Ian Smith and his South African-born wife recently spent two days as guests of the South African Prime Minister Mr. John Vorster and his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Smith stayed with Mr. Vorster at his official residence, Libertas, in Pretoria, on Friday and Saturday (July 10/11).
Rhodesian Officials said the sole purpose of the visit was to watch the Rugby game at Johannesburg, on Saturday, between the touring New Zealand All-Blacks rugby team and Transvaal. Mr. Smith did however, use an official Rhodesian Air Force aircraft.
However diplomatic sources in Salisbury said that Mr. Smith had returned from South Africa with a full brief on British terms for a resumption of negotiations to end the five-year old Anglo Rhodesian Independence dispute.
The newly-elected Conservative Government in Britain has pledged that it will make one more attempt at a solution, but at the same time stresses the "Five principles", which have remained unacceptable to the Rhodesian Government.
The South African Foreign Minister Dr. Hilgard Muller recently met the British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home in London and the Salisbury sources said that Mr. Vorster briefed Mr. Smith on the content and results of those talks.
