Background: Beauty queens from all corners of the globe who have gathered in London for the Miss World contest met the press on Sunday (13 November).

SYNOPSIS: The girls dressed in shorts and "T" shirts-and not the usual, tight-fitting swim suits-lined up to display their vital statistics to the cameramen.

A large contingent of Press photographs and television cameramen, both from Britain and abroad, attended the photo-call.

For over an hour, the girls posed for the benefit of the photographers.

Miss Australia, 18-year-old model Jaye Hopewell, is among those being tipped to win the crown.

But the bookmakers' favourite is Miss Brazil Madalena Sdaraini, a blue-eyed girl who is quoted three to one.

A close look for this ken follower of the contest...

Seventy-three girls are taking part in the event which is organised by the British entertainment group, Mecca.

The host country is represented by Madaline Stringer, a 24-year-old model with fair hair and grey eyes. A cameraman who has forecast the winner correctly for the past three years, however, reckons that Miss Germany, Dagmar Winkler, will take the crown.

So many photographers attended the photo-call that even the spacious ballroom of London's Hammersmith Palais, where it was held, could not provide them with enough space to work in comfort.

Carrying Norway's hopes is Ashid Jenny Ottesen.

Jenny Collins, Miss Luxembourg, Christine Lim, Miss Malaysia..
