  • Description

Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah of Kashmir has received enthusiastic receptions from his people following his release from prison last week. The leader of the Indian-governed state has attracted mass crowds as he makes his slow reunion trip back to the capital at Srinagar.

On Sunday, 20,000 people turned out to welcome him to Udhampur, one of the many towns he has visited for "Welcome Back" receptions.

At Udhampur, the crowd shouted slogans for his long life and success. Addressing them, he repeated his demand that kashmiris must be allowed self-determination to decide their future.

He doubted the Indian Government's claim that a plebiscite must result in communal conflict, and urged India to come forward with an alternative proposal if she wished to avoid a referendum.

(Sheikh Abdullah, who was released from jail last Thursday, is due in Srinagar on Friday).
