  • Description

A UNITED NATIONS WORKING GROUP ON COCOA PRICES AND QUOTAS RESUMED ITS PRIVATE SESSION IN GENEVA TODAY (WEDNESDAY) FOLLOWING SEPARATE MEETINGS OF THE PRODUCING AND CONSUMING COUNTRIES. THE 12-NATION GROUP BEGAN ITS TWO-WEEK CONFERENCE ON MONDAY IN A RENEWED BID TO FIND COMMON GROUND FOR RECONVENING A FULL U.N. COCOA CONFERENCE.

A FULL CONFERENCE IS SCHEDULE NEXT MAY TO DRAW UP AN INTERNATIONAL COCOA AGREEMENT, BUT IT WILL BE HELD ONLY IF THE WORKING GROUP'S DISCUSSIONS SHOW THAT IT HAS REASONABLE CHANCES OF SUCCESS. AT THE GROUP'S LAST MEETING IN NEW YORK TWO MONTHS AGO THERE WERE SUBSTANTIAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SIX PRODUCER MEMBERS -- BRAZIL, CAMEROUN, GHANA, THE IVORY COAST, MEXICO AND NIGERIA -- AND THE SIX CONSUMER MEMBERS -- BRITAIN, FRANCE, HOLLAND, THE UNITES STATES, AND WEST GERMANY.

DELEGATIONS WERE WAITING TO HEAR WHAT POSITION WOULD BE ADOPTED BY GHANA, THE MAJOR COCOA PRODUCER, FOLLOWING THE CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT THERE. GHANA'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT IS CONSIDERED TO BE INFLUENTIAL NOT ONLY AMONG THE SIX PRODUCING COUNTRIES BUT ALSO IN THE UNITES STATES, THE LEADING CONSUMER COUNTRY, WHICH MAY FOLLOW A MORE FLEXIBLE LINE TO PROMOTE GOOD RELATIONS WITH THE NEW GHANAIAN REGIME.
