Background: Thousand of weeping fans thronged the Basilice of San Lerenzo in Rome on Saturday (16 November) to pay their final respects to 73-year-old Italian film director and actor Vittorio de Sica, died in Paris this week of lung cancer.
The mourners, led by de Sica's wife, Spanish actress Maria Marcader, and his son Christian, included personalities from the world of Italian politics and cinema. Film star Sophia Loren -- who appeared in a number of de Sica's film -- accompanied by her husband, director Carlo Ponti, were among the crowd who attended the fuderal service. Also present were leading Italian actors Marcello Mastroianni and Franco Nero, actresses Claudia ??? and Elsa Martinelli, and fellow neo-realist director Roberto Rosellini. De Sica's body was later interred in the family vault in the nearby cemetery of Campo Verano.
De Sioa came to fame in the cinema world with film such as "Shoeshine", "The Bicycle Thieves" and his personal favourite "umberto D". The films illustrated the conditions of post-war Italy, and established -- together with the work of Rosellini -- the nao-realist form of cinema...contrasting with the extravagant epies produced by the American cinema in the 1940s and early 1950s.
In 1972, he won great critical acclaim and an Academy Award for his production "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis". He was in Paris for the premiere of his latest film "The Voyage", starring Sophia Loren and Richard Burton, when he collapsed and died.
