  • Description

At the United Nations, following two days of debate, Security Council members have started working on a resolution aimed at freeing the United States hostage in Iran.

SYNOPSIS: In a rare display of unity, delegates from all corners of the world, including China and the Soviet Union, have backed calls for the release of the Teheran Embassy hostage. ON Monday (3 December), the Bolivian delegate Sergio Palacios de Vizzio spoke on behalf of Latin American nations and likewise called for the liberation of the American hostages and their safe return to their country.

The same day delegates began work on the drafting of a resolution. According to a Security Council source, the resolution will demand the release of the forty-seven hostages reportedly still at the Embassy which has seized on November the 4th. The resolution will also appeal for a peaceful settlement of differences between the United States and Iran, and will call on United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim's continued good offices in solving the crisis. Diplomatic sources believed that consensus among the Security Council members was near, but there were no predictions as to when the draft resolution would be put to the Council's vote.
