The 48th International Motor show opens in Geneva this week with a wide range of new models on display, including the new, the traditional ant eh futuristic.

SYNOPSIS: The organisers of this year's show were surprised by the strong demand for display space, which exceeds 40,000 square metres for the first time. Among the 88 makes of cars on display are a large number of British-made vehicles, ranging from an Austin-deluxe family car to the Rover three point five, last year's European Car of the Year.

British makers have boldly played their trumps, a gleaming selection of luxury status limousines, including Rolls Royce's new baby, their latest Corniche. Priced at GBP 39,000 (75,000 U.S. dollars), it is not exactly the car to use when popping down to the supermarket. Despite the enormous price tags there is no shortage of buyers for this or any other Rolls Royce.

The show's theme is:- "The car brings us closer together", which it always has done in sports and compact models. The latest Ford Capri helps to achieve the new togetherness, as does Datsun's newest, economical family saloon, the "Sunny", conceived for an era of high petrol prices that can only soar higher.

Some of the cars on display feature novel instrumentation and propulsion gadgets, such as the six-wheeled Panther, priced at more than 67,000 U.S. dollars.

Perhaps the most futuristic car on display is this japanese made "Dome", which in Japanese, means "children's dream". its designers claim that apart from giving it a stylish, functional appearance, they made sure it was full of safety features and has a good road performance. They also claim that it has the chassis layout of a racing car, and is also the world's lowest passenger car, with an overall height of 980 millimetres (38.58 inches).
