America's Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson, died on July 14th in London, England. The world was saddened by the passing of Stevenson and at the White House, President Lyndon Johnson paid a moving tribute to Stevenson. Mr. Johnson said Adlai Stevenson would join the tiny roster of men to be remembered by mankind for their greatness.
On nationwide television and radio, Mr. Johnson said Mr. Stevenson was one of the great Americans of all time, likening him in many ways to Abraham Lincoln. Both Lincoln and Stevenson were from the middle western state of Illinois. Stevenson served two terms as governor of that state.
The President sent his personal plane to London with Vice President Hubert Humphrey heading a special presidential delegation to return Stevenson's body to the United States.
