  • Description

IN TUNISIA A MASSIVE RECOVERY PROGRAMME IS UNDERWAY TO RESTORE NORMAL COMMUNICATIONS AND LIFE AFTER THE WORST FLOODS IN THE COUNTRY'S HISTORY.

THE FLOODS WHICH SWEPT THE COUNTRY FROM SEPTEMBER 26 TO NOVEMBER 10, KILLED 542 PEOPLE AND CAUSED DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT GBP14.5 TO GBP16.5 MILLION (35 TO 40 MILLION DOLLARS). ROADS AND BRIDGES SUSTAINED MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF DAMAGE AND EXPORTS OF PHOSPHATES, THE COUNTRY'S MOST VITAL COMMODITY, WERE HIT HARD BY THE FLOODS. NEARLY 15,000 PEOPLE IN THE PHOSPHATE INDUSTRY ARE OUT OF WORK. SCORES OF ROAD AND RAILWAY BRIDGES WERE DESTROYED IN MANY PARTS OF TUNISIA AND TEMPORARY BRIDGES WERE THROWN ACROSS SWOLLEN RIVERS TO SPEED UP RESCUE OPERATIONS AND HELP RESTORATION WORK.

NEARLY A MONTH AFTER THE WORST OF THE FLOODS, IT WAS STILL NECESSARY TO MAKE DETOURS QUINTUPLING THE DISTANCE FROM TUNIS TO SOUSSE, NORMALLY 140 KILOMETRES (87 MILES).

THERE HAS BEEN A TREMENDOUS INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE TO THE TUNISIAN DISASTER WITH MORE THAN 21 COUNTRIES SENDING RELIEF TO TUNISIA.
