  • Description

Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York defended his troubled trip to Latin America Thursday night (5 June) and said militant students should meet with him rather than cause disturbances.

Violent demonstrations marked Rockefeller's visits to Latin America nations last week. He was forced to cancel trips to Peru, Chile, and Venezuela.

Rockefeller said the following at a Republican Party dinner in New York: (Partial transcript follows)
"...In the two trips we've already taken, we've been to 10 countries.

"So we didn't get to Peru. So we had to skip Venezuela - I've been going there for 30 years. They are all my friends -- we'll get back later.

"But ladies and gentlemen, you have no idea from what you read in the press...you have no idea of what's been going on...because you read about a few kids throwing stones.

"Well, I challenged them. I said, 'Look, we've long since passed the stone age and if you fellows are sincere about what you are doing...if you are really sincere and worried about the relationship of the United States (them) elect some representatives and we'll sit down with them. They can tell us what the problem is. You are not going to get anywhere by creating violence.

'You are complaining about the United States being in Vietnam because you don't like violence, so what do you do? You take to the streets and throw stones.'
"I said, 'This is no answer. Elect some representatives and come and sit down and tell us your problems. This is what we're here for.'"
